When Do You Need to Enlarge an Image?

Sometimes an image is too small for what you need—a low-res thumbnail you want to use as a hero, a small screenshot that has to go in a presentation, or a photo you’d like to print at a larger size. Enlarging (upscaling) adds pixels so the image has the dimensions you need. The catch is that the tool has to invent those new pixels, so very large upscaling can look a bit soft. For moderate increases—say, doubling the size or bumping 800px to 1200px—the result usually looks fine.

How Enlarging Works: Pixels and Percentage

When you enlarge an image, you’re increasing the number of pixels. A 400×300 image enlarged to 800×600 has four times as many pixels. The tool interpolates between existing pixels to fill the gaps. At modest zoom levels (e.g. 150% or 200%), the result usually stays sharp. At extreme levels (e.g. 400% or 500%), you may see softening or artefacts. For best quality, stick to moderate enlargements.

You can enter exact pixel dimensions (e.g. 1200×800) or use percentage (e.g. 200% makes the image twice as wide and tall). Social presets (Instagram, Facebook, etc.) set dimensions for you. For print, you often need a certain pixel count for a given physical size at a given DPI. Our tool doesn’t do DPI conversion, but it does let you set exact width and height so you can hit the right pixel dimensions (e.g. 2400×3600 for an 8×12 at 300 DPI).
